Happy Thanksgiving!

November 25, 2010

Written by Jim Denison (check out his blog at www.godissues.org)

Today we gather to observe God’s favorite holiday. It is the one holiday mandated by Scripture: “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Thanksgiving is the will of God.

It’s a hard command to keep these days, isn’t it? I am an apologist, a person who defends the relevance and reasonableness of the Christian faith. This week my task is to defend Thanksgiving. To convince you that this should be not just a day on your calendar but a daily experience in your soul. This is not my opinion, but God’s.

Consider four short verses in God’s word: “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not put out the Spirit’s fire” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-19). These brief commands are interrelated, and crucial to our souls. If you would like more of God’s joy, peace and power this Thanksgiving week, do what his word says.

First, “rejoice always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16). Biblical joy is a sense of well-being which transcends circumstances. “Happiness” is produced by “happenings,” but joy is produced by the Holy Spirit. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace . . .” (Galatians 5:22).

We choose joy when we choose to live in the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 commands us to “be filled with the Spirit.” The words mean to be continually being controlled by the Spirit, to submit our lives to him. In the Bible, God is a King. In our culture, he is a hobby. When we make God our King and submit to his Spirit, we experience his joy

Second, Scripture tells us to “pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This is how we stay in the Spirit. Walk through the day with God. Pray when you have a decision to make. Pray when you face a temptation or find an opportunity. God’s word promises us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). As you pray through your day, you will encounter the tangible peace of your Lord.

The first part of Halloween Week

November 21, 2010

We had such a fun and busy Halloween week.  Our first party was at the San Angelo Association of Realtors.  Several of the adults were dressed up and had masks on.  Landry was not a fan at all.  She kept telling me, “lets go to the car”.  Once she realized their were real people under the masks she was ok.  I wasn’t sure how much fun we were going to have but by the end of the night she had a ghost as a bestfriend and couldn’t get enough of the man with a monkey mask.

Not real excited at this point

I was working a booth so figured I would throw on the ONLY Halloween costume that would still fit

Landry won The Funniest Costume and got a ribbon and stuffed dog.  She was telling me she was #1.  She was so excited and I was too!

The next evening we went to our Church’s Fall Festival.  The blow up slide was the big hit.  I had to carry Landry up at first and go down with her so she was ok with it.  The next day I was feeling it.  I remember that being so much easier….I  must be getting older.

Hilary and Annabelle….she was just precious as a Giraffe

Kim and Maci

Landry fishing for a prize

Not sure I could recommend this.  Marla, Landry and I, Hilary, and Kim and Maci all went down the slide together.  Needless to say the little girls were scared and all us big girls got some kind of injury I think.  I ended up with a slide burn on my elbow but it was fun!

The youth minister’s daughter, Brynlee was good all by herself, but Landry still wanted me to go with her and really who doesn’t like a giant slide

Landry’s Early Birthday Present

FINALLY Landry got a swing set!!!!  She was so excited and has been out there everyday since.

First Trip to the Pumpkin Patch

November 19, 2010

While we were in Midland we hit up the Keep Midland Beautiful Fair and made a trip to the Pumpkin Patch.

Well got two of them to keep their eyes open

She was seeing if she was as tall as the stacked pumpkins

I’m sure they are both thrilled I posted this picture.

We had a hard time keeping her out of the sand.  She thought this was the best part.

Visiting the International Water Lily Garden

November 14, 2010

San Angelo has several hidden treasures and one of them is the Inernational Water Lily Garden.  It’s a collection of water lilies from around the world.  When you visit the garden at the right time in the summer some of the lily pads are HUGE!  Mom, Ken, Landry, and I went down one hot afternoon to check them out.

Like Father, Like Daughter

November 11, 2010

I walked in on Landry the other day and this is what I found.  It just cracked me up.  She was going potty in our bathroom and was reading out loud one of Jared’s hunting magazines.  Of course once she saw I had the camera she gave me a big smile.  What else will she pick up from her daddy????

Putting the babies to bed

November 9, 2010

Landry wanted all her babies to take a nap with her even though it left her hardly any room in the bed

I told her we should make the babies their own bed, so we did, and it solved that problem

Landry’s craft

November 8, 2010

The other day I picked up Landry and she showed me the shaker she had made.  Retha is so good at doing crafts with the kids using whatever she has in her kitchen or in her house for that matter.  Landry has come home with all kinds of noodles glued to a piece of paper and even made me a  mother’s day pin.  This particular day the kids wanted to do a craft and apparently on Barney they made shakers, so Retha went hunting for what she could find.  Here is a picture of Landry’s shaker.  It just cracked me up and made me love Retha even more.

And it happens to be Jared’s favorite beer.  🙂

Olivia’s 3rd Birthday Party

November 7, 2010

As always we had a great time at Olivia’s birthday party.  The girl made a haul and the weather was beautiful so it was lots of  fun!  You can’t beat swinging, a Dora bouncy house, and cake and ice cream!

The Birthday Girl and LJ

After the Dora pinata broke Landry was looking at me like “can I have free grabs on all this candy?”

Playing Dress Up

November 7, 2010

Landry is wearing Grandma Riddle’s (Jennifer’s mom)  clip on earrings here.  She wanted to look at herself in the mirror.

Kim gave us some of Carley’s dress up clothes and accessories, so here Landry has dolled herself all up.

The other day I found her in our closet putting on Jared’s boots…wrong feet but still cute!
